Understanding the Polyvagal Theory: Three States of Nervous System
Learn about the three states of your nervous system and how to navigate between them for optimal health and resilience.
The Science Behind It
The Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, explains that your nervous system has three states: ventral vagal (safe and social), sympathetic (fight-or-flight), and dorsal vagal (shutdown/freeze). Understanding these states helps you recognize when you're dysregulated and use appropriate tools to return to safety.
Beginner's Guide
Ventral vagal state: calm, social, creative. Sympathetic state: alert, energized, reactive. Dorsal vagal state: numb, withdrawn, disconnected. Notice which state you're in throughout the day. Most stress comes from mismatched states—being in sympathetic when you need ventral vagal.
Practical Exercise
Practice identifying your nervous system state: When do you feel safe and social? When do you feel anxious or reactive? When do you feel numb or disconnected? Use this awareness to choose appropriate tools.
