Nadi Shodhana: Alternate Nostril Breathing
An ancient yogic breathing technique that balances the left and right hemispheres of your brain, promoting mental clarity and emotional balance.
The Science Behind It
In yoga philosophy, the left nostril connects to the right brain (intuition, creativity) and the right nostril to the left brain (logic, analysis). Alternating between them creates hemispheric balance. Modern research shows this technique improves focus, reduces anxiety, and enhances cognitive function.
Beginner's Guide
Sit comfortably. Use your right thumb to close your right nostril. Inhale through your left nostril for a count of 4. Close your left nostril with your ring finger. Exhale through your right nostril for a count of 4. Inhale through your right nostril. Switch and repeat. Do 5-10 rounds.
Practical Exercise
Practice this in the morning to set a balanced tone for your day, or before important decisions when you need both intuition and logic. Great for creative work and problem-solving.
