My Honest Stress Support Toolkit for Overwhelmed Moms
Let me be honest: motherhood is the most beautiful and the most overwhelming thing I've ever experienced. And I don't think we talk enough about the second part.
The mental load of motherhood is real. It's the invisible labor of remembering everything — doctor's appointments, developmental milestones, what's in the fridge, when the diapers are running low, whether the baby's nails need trimming. It's constant, and it's exhausting.
Over time, I've built a toolkit of practices that help me manage the overwhelm. Not eliminate it — I don't think that's possible. But manage it, so I can be present for the moments that matter.
Breathwork
This is my most-used tool. When I feel the anxiety rising — the tightness in my chest, the racing thoughts — I pause and do box breathing. Four counts in, four counts hold, four counts out, four counts hold. Even two rounds can shift my nervous system from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest.
Brain Dumps
Every evening, I spend five minutes writing down everything in my head. Not organized, not pretty — just a stream of consciousness onto paper. Getting it out of my mind and onto the page creates space. It's like clearing the cache on a computer.
Movement That Feels Good
I stopped forcing myself to exercise and started moving in ways that feel good. Some days that's a walk with the stroller. Some days it's ten minutes of yoga while the baby plays on a mat. Some days it's dancing in the kitchen. The goal isn't fitness — it's regulation.
Saying No
This is the hardest one. But learning to say no — to social obligations, to unsolicited advice, to the pressure to bounce back — has been the most powerful stress management tool in my arsenal.
Asking for Help
And finally, asking for help. Not as a last resort, but as a regular practice. Help isn't weakness. It's wisdom. It's recognizing that you were never meant to do this alone.
